According to the british newspaper 'The Guardian', A substance that could harm health was discovered in tap water in the United States several years ago, but the government didn't do anything to get rid of the substance.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG), said that US regulators and water utilities corporation have analyzed 56 new chemicals identified in tap water over the past two years.
These substances have also been shown to contain dangerous substances that can damage the liver and lead to various health problems, including cancer and infertility.
According to the EWG, regulators have also confirmed that tap water contains pesticides and radioactive substances, which are by-products of disinfectants.
particularly, toxic substance 'perfluorinated compound (PFAS)' was identified in US tap water.
PFAS is used in various industries, such as frying pan coatings and fast food packaging. It is estimated that more than 100 million people drink water which is contaminated with this substance.
The EWG points out that the problem is that these substances are not regulated even though they were discovered years ago.
The EWG emphasizes that without proper monitoring, there will be more types of hazardous substances in tap water.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is tracking substances in tap water under the Unregulated Contaminant Surveillance Rules (UMCR).
However, this is only an early stage of regulation, and it will take a long time for new regulations to be applied.
Although the EPA found surprising levels of PFAS in 2013, the government didn't do any meanigful actions to regulate harmful things in US tap water.
